Digging in: Growing season begins

May 01, 2026

Food4Health Program, with partner Levo, cleaned the hydroponic growing systems so the first round of seedlings — sugar snap peas, broccoli, kale and collards — could be planted.

With cold weather crops planted, David Juros, Food4Health operations manager shares his excitement for the start of the 2026 season.

“Our patients get excited for the extremely fresh and tasty vegetables we are able to offer to them! It’s a great way to try out new healthy foods,” he says.

Warmer weather vegetables — tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and more — will be planted soon depending on the weather and night temperatures. Food4Health also will open a greenhouse on the extension of Seymour Avenue to allow vegetables to grow year-round.

Last year, Food4Health farms harvested more than 4,000 pounds of healthy, nutrient-dense vegetables. As many departments already know, the farms are a great opportunity for team-building. If interested in that or just volunteering solo, email david.juros@hhchealth.org.
